"Hungry” for some sleep? Get your sleep to stay skinny.
Sleep puts the “beauty” in Sleeping Beauty.
Feeling (and looking) overworked, overscheduled, and overweight? Most of us can raise our hand high to this question. Sleep deprivation harms your weight, energy level, and skin, hair, and nail appearance.
FACT: Lack of sleep makes you moody, depressed, and anxious, which can lead to overeating. Also, our skin, hair, and nails repair best during the night, so lack of sleep diminishes your beauty’s natural regeneration ability.
Why does lack of sleep cause weight gain? We have some clues.
Shortage of sleep lowers levels of a hormone that suppresses the appetite—for the intellectually curious, the hormone is called “leptin”—making you feel hungry. Shortage of sleep also raises levels of another hormone—ghrelin—that causes you to feel hungry. It’s a lose-lose eating situation.
So, here are some practical suggestions for getting a good night’s sleep. Try to relax before going to bed—a hot bath surrounded by lit soy candles (which burn without forming carcinogens!) followed by stretching is the perfect “bedtime story.”
Avoid spicy foods and late meals. Avoid caffeine especially later in the day (no caffeine after 4:00 p.m.).
Check drugs and supplements for their suggested intake times—some herbs and medications, such as decongestants, can increase the heart rate or activate brain activity, making it difficult to sleep.
Choose to reduce your hunger by getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night! Don’t just dream about a full night’s sleep—make it happen! You may need to rearrange your life to be on a more consistent sleep schedule. Your health is well worth the effort it takes.
