Law #11: The Fifteen Physical Laws of Accelerated Weight Loss

Wednesday, September 9, 2009, 11:43 AM EST [General]

"Hungry” for some sleep? Get your sleep to stay skinny.

Sleep puts the “beauty” in Sleeping Beauty.

Feeling (and looking) overworked, overscheduled, and overweight? Most of us can raise our hand high to this question. Sleep deprivation harms your weight, energy level, and skin, hair, and nail appearance.

FACT: Lack of sleep makes you moody, depressed, and anxious, which can lead to overeating. Also, our skin, hair, and nails repair best during the night, so lack of sleep diminishes your beauty’s natural regeneration ability.

Why does lack of sleep cause weight gain? We have some clues.

Shortage of sleep lowers levels of a hormone that suppresses the appetite—for the intellectually curious, the hormone is called “leptin”—making you feel hungry. Shortage of sleep also raises levels of another hormone—ghrelin—that causes you to feel hungry. It’s a lose-lose eating situation.

So, here are some practical suggestions for getting a good night’s sleep. Try to relax before going to bed—a hot bath surrounded by lit soy candles (which burn without forming carcinogens!) followed by stretching is the perfect “bedtime story.”

Avoid spicy foods and late meals. Avoid caffeine especially later in the day (no caffeine after 4:00 p.m.).

Check drugs and supplements for their suggested intake times—some herbs and medications, such as decongestants, can increase the heart rate or activate brain activity, making it difficult to sleep.

Choose to reduce your hunger by getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night! Don’t just dream about a full night’s sleep—make it happen! You may need to rearrange your life to be on a more consistent sleep schedule. Your health is well worth the effort it takes.

Law #10: The Fifteen Physical Laws of Accelerated Weight Loss

Wednesday, June 24, 2009, 09:08 AM EST [General]

    10. Cold water = cool waist and bright face.

Drinking ice-cold, calorie-free water is a great way to help “warm up” your weight loss results. Why? Your body has to burn calories to warm up the cold water to your core body temperature (98.6 degrees).

Drinking lots of water not only reduces your appetite by simply filling you up, but it is also very important for keeping your skin hydrated (just think about dehydrated lettuce to visualize the importance of water to your skin) and your body energized.
Reach for ultra-pure bottled water instead of spring water, because it is cleaner and healthier without toxins or inorganic matter. Drink unsweetened tea (green or black) or liposomal powered beauty water for extra antioxidant benefits.

FACT: You burn approximately 7 calories per cup of ice-cold fluid! If that doesn’t sound like much, multiply that times 8 to 12 glasses per day, then times 30 days per month, and then times 12 months to burn 6 to 9 pounds worth of calories per year.

Choose to give fat the cold shoulder by drinking ice-cold water (or other calorie-free fluids like flavored water).

P.S. Have some fun by asking your waiter for “ice-cold diet water”—you will be amused by the puzzled looks you will receive!
